Does job security honestly exist anywhere now? In the UK for instance, where industry can change its mind at alarming speeds, we'd question whether it does. We can however reveal security at the market sector level, by digging for high demand areas, coupled with shortages of trained staff.

Looking at the computer sector, the 2006 e-Skills survey demonstrated a 26 percent shortfall of skilled workers. It follows then that for each four job positions existing throughout computing, employers are only able to locate properly accredited workers for three of them. Achieving full commercial IT qualification is therefore a quick route to succeed in a long-lasting as well as pleasing occupation. It's unlikely if a better time or market settings is ever likely to exist for getting trained into this hugely emerging and evolving industry.

Certainly one of Microsoft's over-riding strengths over the last couple of decades has to have been their drive towards professional level accreditation, causing many other corporations to follow suit & raise their standards. So much so that the whole I.T. world & particularly senior managers view skilled professional 'Microsoft' certifications with great respect.

Don't put too much store, like so many people do, on the accreditation program. Training is not an end in itself; this is about gaining commercial employment. Begin and continue with the end in mind. You may train for one year and then end up performing the job-role for decades. Ensure you avoid the fatal error of opting for what may seem to be a program of interest to you and then spend decades in an unrewarding career!

It's well worth a long chat to see what industry will expect from you. What qualifications they will want you to have and how you'll build your experience level. Spend some time considering how far you wish to go as often it can present a very specific set of accreditations. Always seek guidance and advice from an experienced industry advisor, irrespective of whether you have to pay - it's considerably cheaper and safer to investigate at the start whether you've chosen correctly, rather than realise after several years of study that you've picked the wrong track and have wasted years of effort.
